Alternator conversion 1800 1964

Ron,

Far be it from me to argue with you, but I can give you a reason for using an electronic VR -- suppression of transient spikes.

Some years back, Cameron upgraded his 122 with Cibie lamps that had separate bulbs. That was properly done with heavy wiring and with the bulbs on relays. With a stock Bosch 55 amp alternator and the stock regulator, he'd have to wait several minutes after starting the car before turning the lights on. Turning them on before the battery had fully recharged from running the starter would blow the bulbs every time. An electronic VR cured this instantly.

When I did a similar upgrade soon after, I put in the same VR and have never had a problem. I run it at a full 14.9 volts -- I like bright lights. I'm now on year six of the same battery, which was over two years old when I did the conversion, and which had even been run flat several times prior to that. This is the longest I've ever had any battery last in any vehicle. I've had no problems with acid boiling out or anything of that sort. I can let the car sit for six weeks and it starts right up.

Maybe this makes no sense, but that's been Cam's experience and mine.
