Understanding... 1800 1964

Cameron;

First of all...without a thorough electronic evaluation (taking into account field resistance, and temperature effects, which are undoutably different) or at least a lot of practical firsthand experience from someone of what happens when using one manufacturers' Vreg with anothers' alt., I wouldn't recommend it either...why complicate things unnecessarily?

The "voltage drop" which the "local guy" speaks of, is probably a system voltage drop (in other words, while the engine is running, the system voltage is something less when using a Marchall alt with a Bosch Reg)...and that may very well be...I wouldn't know...I've never tried it, don't recommend it, (see above), maybe he has, and that's what he found...

OK so if you can get Marschall alts cheap, you have to consider the combination...I'll take a look at the differences, but understand my heart wont be in it, since I can get used 60A Delcos at $20 apiece...and beautiful, quality rebuilt units for $120...how much cheaper do you want to get them...

-------

...as far as the overvoltage killing your lamps, that will take a more involved explaination and some time...I'll see if I can write up something...

...if you measure 15V at the battery terminals, that is likely while or right after it has been charged...this is called "surface charge", (that is, it is temporary, and it not low impedance, meaning if you drew current from the battery (instead of putting it INTO the battery), it would shortly collapse to 13.6 or less). For a plastic bucket containing acid, and lead plates, there is a fair amount of physics and chemistry going on in the lowly car battery...I've found very good info on batteries at: http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/ the FAQ section is very informative.

Cheers
