You can take 30 mils off the head safely. You won't get the compression up to a decent level without changing the pistons. You'll be at 9.3:1 or so.
I had a '68 144S with SU's that I drove as a daily driver for 18 yrs. I had a '72 B20B head with a modified B20E bottom end that got me to 12:1 compression and a set of RR neeedles in the SU's. Better flow from a set of custom K&N's will help, find a pair of K&N's from a canister like a '84 corolla and make up the housing to fit. The stock K&N's that are made for the SU's restrict the flow a lot.
About the aluminum intake. Be careful that the exhaust manifold that you use it with has the same facing height from the exhaust port surface where the stud and washer mount both to the head. If you cut a B20B exhaust manifold to get the aluminum one to mount, you'll find that the aluminum intake flange is thinner than the cast iron exhaust manifold flange. I cracked an aluminum manifold this way, and had to toss it. The aluminum manifoilds came on early B18's in the 122S and you'll need the matching exhaust manifold.
