Timing belt riding forward - then breaking -aft head gasket replace -HELP

You did definitely bust the belt by using it to tighten the camshaft pulley.

The reason it is riding forward, is almost always because the tensioner is not seated correctly. This is not usually a problem, but if they coated the head with anything when you had the machine work done, it could be. Make sure there is nothing in the hole where the tensioner swivel pin sits, and that the swivel pin is TOTALLY seated in the head. You can grease that part if you want, to make sure that it sits all the way in the head. Even tap it lightly with a hammer (my solution to that problem) to seat it properly. I have seen enough of those problems to know that it is almost always the issue, and that even a tiny angle on the tensioner is very bad for the belt. You might do OK by looking at the tensioner too, to see if there is some reaosn why it wouldnt seat itself against the head correctly.

Again... there COULD be other causes, but I can't think of any others at the moment.
