Crank the engine and watch the rev counter (sounds like you're British, otherwise the tachometer). If the needle flickers your hall sensor is probably OK, otherwise suspect it. It's in the distributor and fails at higher mileage.

Otherwise, it needs a more extensive diagnosis by referring to the FAQ as Bagle says. Regards.
