The fan resistor is a round green gizmo with four wire sprouting from it. It's about 1" diameter, hollow, and about 4" or 5" long. It mounts alongside the fan motor on a bracket secured by a motor mounting screw.
The wires you saw at the white connector attach to the resistor.
It certainly sounds as if you have a bad resisitor -- it's a common problem.
Changing the resistor is a MAJOR job. When you finally disassemble everything, you might as well also install a new blower motor.
