If you have no board, then two of the pins must be jumped. Otherwise the gauge will be dead. (Do you realize that you must removed the printed circuit board from the cluster plastic housing to find the comp board?)
Here's a trick with the hi-beam indicator bulb in the later 240 clusters. Both of mine -- an '86 and a '90 -- were so bright that I found it distracting.
Paint the top of the bulb and about 1/3 of the way down with "white out," the stuff used to correct mistyping on paper. Even though it's white, it's also opaque. Blocks the light very well and makes the hi-beam indicator more "user friendly."
