Another O/D problem 200 1983

Is this an automatic or standard?
If it's an automatic then adding fluid to the correct level is essential. IF it's losing fluid, then tracking down the leaks is the next step- a new tailshaft bushing and seal are probably needed, and the cooler lines are oftentimes leaking at the clamp by the bell housing.
Low fluid will cause a trans to not engage, or disengage.
I would not add brake fluid under any conditions to this fluid. The fluids are not compatible and brake fluid is likely to have a detrimental effect on rubber seals. I think the idea is that it will swell up existing rubber seals, and maybe cause them to seal better- longer term they'll ALL have to be replaced, likely meaning the trans is junk.
Good luck with it!
