That is a tough choice. Whe our kids were small we had a minivan, and it was very convenient for loading/unloading the small ones. When the minivan got a rod knock (mitsubishi 2.6 liter 4 cylinder) we sold it and bought the 1986 745T. The 745T has been a great car, and will continue to be a great car. But my wife prefers it's manual transmission, and our kids were bigger when the 745T was purchased.
The vintage of Chrysler minivan which you own has s dreadful track record on the transmission. One friend sold his when the second transmission was going bad at 120,xxx miles. The 850 Volvos must have a better transmission record than the Chrysler minivan, but the minivan is very convenient with small kids.
I found the Chrysler minivan's interior trim to be junk. Many parts were loose at 100,000 miles. The power windows had to be repaired several times. The interior trim in our 200,000+ mile Volvos is still in great shape, and the power windows have never given any trouble.
Only Erwin and his wife can decide which cars to keep. In my opinion, the 850 will be cheaper to maintain than the minivan. The 850 will also be more fun to drive. The minivan is easier to load and unload kids.
