I'm guessing that the return line is not clear. When you use gas, the pressure in the line then goes down and the pump isn't dead-heading as much. Follow the procedure in the Bentley manual to check if the return line is clear. I think basically you hook up a pressure gauge to the fuel rail, pinch closed the return line in the engine compartment and then see if the pressure goes up. If so, then the line is clear.
