What is this A/C electrical component? 700 1988

Thanks for everyone's quick response. Yes, it makes sense that it is needed. Couldn't I find a Diode at Radio Shack that would handle the current and splice that in?
Otherwise, who knows of a "pick and pull" in the Clearwater, FL area that would be good for me to go to.
Again, many thanks. Between the FAQ and the Forum, another problem is solved by the Brickboard!
