That's funny, 'cause I'd just finished replacing a compressor, so when I saw the post, I went outside and chomped up the mystery widget on the old(siezed) one; convenient, eh?
I'm sure any Radio Shack rectifier diode would work; just make sure the band(cathode) end is towards the wire, not the ground.
