don't worry about bending valves. i would pull the belt and the pulleys off and check the pins that align the gears to the cam and aux shaft. be advised the crank pulley will rotate around it's center and make the crank mark look right outside and be off inside. the 740 and 240 should look identical at tdc. something's off. good luck, chuck.
