I have not seen any recommendations against 10w-40 and don't see any reason
why it would not be fine. 10W-30 would also be OK unless it gets pretty hot
where you are. Used to be you used 20 in the winter and 30 in the summer
and if your engine was badly worn you would use 40. If it was below zero
you might use 10W. The rationale for multigrades was that you would use
the same all year round.
Pinging probably is more like steel ball bearings than plastic BBs, depending
on its severity.
