Sounds like a fun project... I'm a bit envious. I picked up a pair of what I later identified as Triumph TR3 carbs with velocity stacks at a garage sale for $10. Like you, I just had to try 'em on my Volvo.. because the shafts were tight.

They worked and ran fine, and looked cool being polished and a good bit longer, but leaked like a siv, so now they are just part of the collection. Of course, they didn't offer any more flow being the same size throughts as the Volvo carbs.

As for the flange you mention.. I'm not getting a clear picture of what you are describing, but... if you got a plan that works, go with it.
