Having gottne a trany out of a '91 244 by removing both, and out of a '92 244 by dropping just the tranny, I have to agree with twoforty, dropping the tranny is a LOT easier. I put the car on ramps, used a $35 Harbor Freight tranny jack, and went at it. Based upon B-Board tips, I used a 2' extension, a good thin-walled 18mm socket, and a u-joint to get to the bolts at the top of the bell housing. I also made sure the torque converter didn't fall out. My biggest problem was braking the tranny oil lines loose, but eventually PB Blaster did the trick.
Good luck.
