M41 and overdrive 1800

I am having some problems with my M41 in my '73 1800ES. First the overdrive will not engage or stay engaged over 45 mph. Is it ruined? Is there anything I might be able to try to remedy this problem short of replacing the overdrive solenoid? Next, almost every time I put it into reverse, whether or not I put it into second before hand I hear and feel gear grinding. What does this mean, how can I fix it. Last, sometimes, at a stand still or moving very slowly it is very difficult to put my car into first or second gear. What is going on? My transmission is topped of with 5w-30 motor oil.
