Yes, it is. Even with those precautions, a new AT from Volvo (put in by the local dealer $6,000 and 20K miles ago) failed. I do not understand because at least mechanically this is pretty much the same AT as in the contemporary Lexus LS400, a larger and heavier 8 cylinder car with a golden reputation for reliability. As always, Nick at FCPGroton came to the rescue in the guise of an AT rebuild kit. My mechanic friend here is considering a rebuild after he checks the Volvo factory manual. Think of it, I will try to get what instructions I can from Aisin Warner and Lexus. If you can think of any source of wisdom and know how on the AW30-40, please let me know. I will post a request for such help at Brickboard.
