Tranny question? S90-V90

On my car (94) the shifter has D, 3, L. Im not sure if the 97 is different. Low covers both first and second gear. If I have the shifter in L the engine will rev all the way to 6500rpm and hit the rev limiter in second accompanied by a audio alarm and the up arrow. But it never goes into third on its own. I have to move the shifter one notch up in order to do that. Guess how I figured that out?

I think the manual doesn't differentiate between first and second. They are both considered low gear.
