If it has a decent compression test and the automatic makes its way through the gears OK, then perhaps 1 grand would be OK. It's really a subjective thing though. I mean, many of my friends and family wonder why I bother.
Anyway, the thing will need some work sooner or later so my advise would be to study up, or save up.
