No Cold start now... 700

Curiously, I noticed the battery gauge only moves a little into low red zone at first turn of key. Is battery toasted, because long winded running on weak alternato? Starter engages with no problem, it'll catch and start, but quits right away now. Give a new battery a try?????? Thanks
