Hmm, can you see the little cam inside the block that the fuel pump lever rides on? If you crank the engine, does it turn around? Does the engine seem to crank unevenly?

It may be a $500 diagnosis of a $5 problem, but it sort of sounds like the cam isn't turning and activating the pump.
