M41 Project update 1800

Hi all,
I am back out one the streets this weekend, on my back, putting back in my daily driver M41 after a front tranmission seal repair. The seal repair went well thanks to previous advice from experts. Notable was a lack of a gasket under the edges of the seal housing. I guess that explains the leak.
From jacking off the ground to setting it back down, the job only took 4.5 hours, half the time spend on the initial switch, when I placed the Helicoil inserts in the bell housing.
One of the best tricks I learned from the internet knowledge base was found at VClassics in a article about M41 conversions. Be sure to put the tranny in gear before trying to thread the tranny input shaft into the clutch set up, it is much easier to line up the splines of the shaft this way. This avoids the agony of prolonged elevation (30 sec vs. 15 min)of a 70lb iron weight above you while lying on your back, with only 18 inches of clearance. I have got to get a lift one day.
I have my overdrive rebuild kit ordered from Shayne, to rebuild the spare M41's OD, apparently the o-rings on the main expansion pistons are shot.
Gearbox question, the spare gearbox will drop out of 2nd and 3rd gear with strong variation of engine torque. I think this means the syncros are worn? IF not the syncro rings, what causes this? I cleaned the magnetic plug and added clean oil but did not flush the spare M41 before running it for 300 miles. There were 2-3 matchheads worth of oil/metal gunk on the magnetic plug after the test run. No other gearbox symptoms noted.
(Again at VClassis is another wonderful article on M40/41 rebuilds tempting me to open the gearbox. I realize that there is a minimal $500 in parts for the minimal rebuild scenarios.)
Thanks,
Joel
