The picture of the Italian 544 might just be an aftermarket console. Volvo did sell their own aftermarket console in the late 60's early 70`s for the 140 series called a "Kardantunnelfack". I have never seen one used in a 544, but anything is possible. Here's a picture of the 140 console addition. The name "Kardantunnelfack" reminds me of a John Candy sketch on the Canadian SCTV program where he took and old car, cut off the roof, filled it full of earth and planted flowers - called it a Carden!
