I have seen D24's with problems but lack of lubrication was never one of them. I find the biggest problem with the D24, at least in this area, is finding someone who knows how to work on one.

I own a small Volvo independent shop and I recently had someone in my shop trying to sell me on the virtue of running on waste cooking oil. It involved basically a heater and a filter. The guy admitted he was more of an enthusiast than a sales guy, which is good because the truth of the matter was he had no idea what he was doing. His biggest selling point on it was that "your car will smell like french fries". Idiot! The fact is it smelled like a cross between fried chicken and french fries, but more like chicken. I don't know about you but that would get old in about, oh I don't know 2 seconds maybe 3 at the outside. Now get a load of this, you will need to establish a network of fast food restaurants who will quickly become your best friends because you are going to take away for free what they are used to paying to have taken away, yippie! In So. Cal diesel is already kind of a pain in the ass to get, it is not on EVERY corner like gas so you have to be a little strategic in your driving habits otherwise you will find yourself paying throught the nose for diesel. Now imagine you need to go to your local KFC where your oil connection is to get "tanked up". The guy said that you could run an onboard filtration unit but it was best if you filtered it first and then put it in the car with the filtration unit. Imagine how fast your fuel filter would get clogged if you were trying to strain out fried chicken parts! Now if all of that was not discouraging enough, waste oil is not as efficient as diesel so you get less BTU's per equal amount of the stuff. "But don't worry, once you get up to speed on the freeway it runs just fine" I should've thrown him out of the shop on that one but it was so darn hysterical I couldn't. He went on to say that it was not so much about the mileage it was more of an environmental thing and that I was interested in cleaner air right? My ever so witty reply was, "if I was so concerned about cleaner air why the hell am I driving a diesel?" Poor guy really did not know what to say. He had absolutely no idea of what running a business or marketing an item was about. He said that he watched his friend do one and that he had every confidence that I could put one in in two days time!! I told him that I rip out entire engines in 1/2 a day or less and that if it did indeed take two days to do that it would be necessary to charge 20 hours labor minimum (1400.00) for the install. He told me that the kit was around $900.00 and I asked him what my cost on it was and he said $900.00 so I asked him what the MSRP was and he said $900.00. So I said you expect me to stock these, install them, warrantee them, and not mark them up a dime! Incredible. Anyhow that is my experience with the whole reclaimed waste oil deal and diesels. If you are planning on it and you want to do a 240 I think you might want to reconsider it. My middle child drives one and the only reason she can is because her daddy owns his own Volvo Indy. So, I get to drive hers everytime it needs serviced plus I drove the car every day for 2+ years before she came of age. So I am intimate with the operation and maintenance of these cars, not to mention that I was a trainnie back in the early to mid eighties when these things were hot and heavy. Care to guess who worked on the diesels back then, the trainnies. Normally asperated diesels are unique beasts and the last thing they need is to go slower, oh and smell like fried chicken while they do it.
