Exactly, veggie diesels are strictly a sentimental choice. It's more trouble than most folks are willing to deal with, even if the fuel is "free", it takes a lot of work and networking to keep supplied. It's considered a "carbon-neutral" fuel source, and that's what attracts most folks.
I'd go for an electric myself, if I had the money and time to spend. Way less maintenance, way more torque, if done right. Not to mention I'm in hydro territory, electric car crazy people territory, and the gas is making it look more affordable all the time! It wouldn't be tough to build a 3600 lb 180 volt 2000 amp 245. 746 watts per horsepower iirc.....
