bad temp sender!!
I finally broke down and bought a thermometer, and the temperature is just fine. I put in another gauge cluster, and the gauge read the same, there's no excess resistance in the wiring, so the temp sender is to blame. I don't know if I got the wrong one or if this one is just defective, but now I know I can safely drive the car. Thanks everyone for all of your input!
