I goes both ways. I tried a ball joint remover that turned out to be of soft metal and did not do the job. So I put a very firm hard wood block under the control arm and whacked the ball joint shaft one time and off it went. It did mushroom the shat a bit, but I still could put the locking nut back on. I you are replacing the ball joint the it does not matter if you mushroom the shaft. I rather do that than hit the fork sideway with not counter support for the arm at all. It feel like one can bend something.
