cant back up the car but goes forward S40-V40

can sommeone tell me or give me an idea whats up the problem?
we got hit the big snow storm and i was trying to get out the parking lot by rocking the car back and forth and all of sudden the engine light came on and so was the "wet and winter" lght came (arrow) too. Now I cant get it to back up at all but i can only going forward.i wonder if the transmission is slipping. I only hope it is not going to a major problem.
