If there are no external fluid leaks, it will be a "hard part". Call a dealer and ask about a rebuild/replace.
I don't know where you are, but looking at Strandberg auto I found these:
S40 untested with 18,000 miles = $800.
S40 tested good with 44,000 miles = $700.
Most people don't donate their cars to the junk yard because the tranny went bad. It's because they crumpled up the entire front/rear end.
Besides, who is this mechanic with hard and soft parts??? You don't sound like a dumb blonde joke to me.
