850 Alternator problem. 850 1995

HI.

I have a potential alternator problem. The battery is 3 yrs old, but the shop says it is still good. The engine is running and when I take the positive wire off the battery AND turn on the lights, the engine dies. If i turn on the AC, the engine dies. Is this an alternator or battery problem?
