The voltage from the alternator should be around 14.x volts. Your battery sounds correct, just above 12v. Turning the lights on is sucking up all the juice and the alternator is no longer charging the battery.
Please, do not ever disconnect the battery while the engine is running, that will destroy the electronics very quickly!
Alternators for Volvo do not normally die early. Find a used one, they should work just fine. Or replace the brushes and the diode board.
