The battery is important in the circuit to smooth the voltage. What is the purpose of removing it? Without it you are trying to run the car on a very poorly filtered and regulated voltage. Could do lots of harm to your computers which run the car.
You should be nononitering the in circuit battery voltage. Report on that with/without lights for more info.
