Air working intermittently

All of the sudden it gets real hot here and the air just stops working. I can tell the compressor is not on. I'll fiddle w/ the fan speed knob and sometimes i can get it to click on. The fan works fine. It's almost like an overheating issue and it shuts down. Let it rest a little then it works again. WHen it does work air is almost ice cold. Thanks for any help.
