Having tried various brands of snows both on a budget and without I still to this day am a die hard Firestone Winterforce fan. They are very aggressive tread wise and I had a hard time trying to get stuck during the winter in Massachusetts...and by trying I mean nearly impossible on a FWD VW Golf and then a Civic, and also a Volvo S70.
The tire is cheap cost compared to Michelins or Blizzaks and I truly feel it far outperforms these two in snow traction. They are a studdable tire, I never ran them with studs as I don't really drive on frozen lakes ;-)

some tires I have had:
Blizzaks - okay
Winterforce - absolutely the best
Marangoni - decent but VERY loud
Semperit Ice Grip - so so
Gislaved - decent, but as with the Blizzaks, price does not warrant performance.
