Passat has the edge on the roominess, certainly a little bigger in the rear. But the 1.8T is not a match for the S40s engine. I understand their ratings (HP and torque) are fairly close but the S40's turbo spins (despite the LPT designation) much quicker and much faster and (after having driven both) the S40 accelerates much quicker and without the harsh engien noise of the VW 1.8T. But the Passat is, indeed, a formidable opponent despite its (for me, at least) boring looks.
