I have a V40 that I am quite fond of. You will not be disappointed with it's power in the hills...not much can keep up with me here in the hills in the N. Calif. Sierra. 20,000 miles and not a single problem. I too considered the Passat but both the V-6 and the 1.8 turbo are not even a close match to the Volvo. I was an independent Volvo mechanic for years and this little V40 is one of my top favorites of all models.

Good luck...you will enjoy it....oh.....and break it in properly...very important!
