I dropped that VW ditty in so that you can rule out a bad starter?? Of course, there should be a spare wire for mechanics to engage the starter remotely, between the battery and air cleaner?

EDIT: BTW, did you check that the wire from the battery to the starter is in good clean and itght condition?
