It's a bit of a two sided coin. On one hand, the service schedule is there for a reason. On the other hand, later model cars like 850s will have silly service schedules. To keep the cost of maintence down with consumer reports things like "no tranny flush required" happen. And that's bad. Sometimes you've got improvise, so long as you always change your oil =) Also, OEM is best is a pretty good policy, but if you're willing to put the time into the research and the $$ into purchasing it, things that are better than OEM can be found for certain applications (i.e. battery, plugs, struts, shocks, brakes, etc)
