Conventional motor oil, even after being refined from crude oil, still contains impurities that are detrimental to lubrication. Paraffin is a common contaminant found in conventional motor oil. Quaker State and Pennzoil are both well-known to contain paraffinic wax. I'm not so sure about their synthetic motor oils. Paraffin is what causes motor oil to thicken in cold temperatures. I would assume that it would also create gunk in any engine. My uncle used only Quaker State in his 1996 Buick Park Avenue and when his mechanic opened up his engine when it failed you will not believe the amount of soot and gunk in it. It was unbelievable.
