The circuit delivering battery with the key off maintains memory for radio station selection on those digital-programmed units, or those with clock displays. For instance, this "Volvo 4 Microprocessor" unit (RX-2Q) from the same era but in the next trim level. If your radio has mechanical station selector buttons, no battery is needed.
