760 turbo oil separator 700

I was trying to remove the oil separator on my '84 760 turbo to clean it yesterday and the base of it broke off flush with the block ( the part that goes into the rubber thing in the block). Should I try and pull the other piece out that is still on the block? There's a replacement oil separator on an '89 in the local salvage yard that I can buy.

Thanks,
Dave

Hello,

The hose that extends into the oil pan is not very critical. My brother had a 1984 760 Turbo. He replaced his oil separator and the rubber hose fell completely into the oil pan. He sold the car with nearly 300k miles on it and hadn't a bit of trouble with the hose in the pan. There was no sign that the hose was missing. Also, I would suggest a new oil separator box, not a used one. They are only around $40 from Volvo and coke up a lot. A used one may be no better that what you removed.

I hope this helps...

Hi Joe,

I bought a new oil separator today and put it on. Everything seems fine now. I'm really hoping that some of the oil leaks will go away. Do you know if an engine bay wiring harness from an '89 740 turbo would work in my car? I thought that the later cars had the better harnesses. Mine is getting pretty bad.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

I can't tell you for sure, but I doubt that it would work. The B230FT has the cam-driven distributor at the rear of the cylinder head (started in 1985), as your B23FT has the distributor on the side of the block. If it were a B230 car already, the harness may match up, but not in your case (not that this is a bad thing; the B23FT that you have is thought to be a more desirable engine). There are likely other wiring differences in the two harnesses, but this is the most obvious to me.

I hope this helps...

Joe,

Do you know if anyone sells this harness new? I noticed that my 240 has the distributor in the same location as my '84 760 Turbo. I'm not sure what the differences would be between a harness for a non turbo 240 and the 760 turbo.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

IPD used to have them new, and I believe they still do. However, they are not listing one for your car on the website (www.ipdusa.com). I would try giving them a call if you have never dealt with them before. They may have one, just not online. I have used them in the past as an alternative to dealer prices, and they have nice products and good service. They are showing a different part number for nearly every year of the 760. If not there, I'm sure you can find a new one somewhere.

P.S. - The list price for an engine harness here at the dealership is $457.03

Yeah, I'm familiar with IPD. They've always been pleasant to deal with.' Will give them a call to see if they have the harness that I'm looking for. If nothing else, I don't mind paying the $457 for a new harness at the dealer. I think the car is worth spending the money on. I need to do that along with switching the York compressor over to a rotary and I should be all set.

Thanks for the info.

Dave

The base connects to a hose that drains into the oil pan. If you pull this hose up too far so as to unhook it from the clamp holding it in the pan, then you have to drop the pan to replace it. Be VERY CAREFUL in removing the stub end down in the hole. See the FAQ for tips and photos.
