Hi, all. Longtime lurker, first time poster. Weird things:
1993 240, non-CA LH2.4. Second owner, bought in 2001. Has always run well until now.
Noted rough idle ca. one week ago. This turned into sluggish performance and then into stalling at lights over the last week. So in I went...
FI OBD code 2-3-2, black plugs, sooty exhaust, gas smell all round, CEL on.
Pulled cap/rotor. Arced a bit and needed replacement, so I did, along with plugs. No change.
Very dirty throttle body... ah ha! Cleaned until shiny, paying attention to the vacuum ports. Reinstalled. No dice.
TPS clicks just as the butterfly begins to move. Will NOT run with TPS disconnected, as I found by forgetting to reconnect. Ruled that out.
Sprayed down the AMM with MAF cleaner. Nope. R&R with known good AMM borrowed from friendly parts shop. Nope.
Read horror stories about failed FPR. Replaced that "just because". No luck.
Tested FI components in mode 3. IAC sounded weak. Pulled it and watched it move only a tiny bit. Another AH HA! Cleaned, watched it cycle to open the window fully, reinstalled. Now idling high. Hmmmm. Idle slowed over a few minutes and then got chuggy and black and bounced to a halt.
Pulled all intake hoses. Found a "duh" - dogleg hose down from flame trap was split. ANOTHER AH HA! Replaced. Sadly, no.
Tested coolant temp resistance at the ECU - matches Bentley table for ambient temp. 951 ECU, BTW.
Got to thinking about ignition again. Checked coil per Bentley and found:
1.1Ω primary
OPEN secondary
How can this be? It does spark, after all. Tested spark with old plug. Orange spark, not blue. Hmmmm.
Pulled connector to ignition amplifier and reconnected.
So. Here I am on a Sunday wondering if this coil is sparky enough to run the car, but not enough to burn all the fuel, resulting in my crazy rich condition.
Strangely, when I was testrunning once I got going she would go. Not very powerfully, but smoothly enough. But when I had to come to a STOP... well, that's when she just died.
Coil? And it looks like the ignition amplifier is the original part, so I suppose that's a possibility.
Ideas? Taunting? Bueller?
Thanks for anything. :-)
