123 Distributor install help - B20F

I'm trying to get my '72 145E (B20F) to work with this new 123 Distributor but I'm having zero luck so far.
Following the install instructions, select correct curve based on my original unit, bring the engine to the static timing mark of 10BTDC, leave the wire to neg. coil off, switch on ignition, turn the dist. body anti-clockwise till the visible LED goes out, now rotate clockwise till an LED just light, tighten the clamp and connect cap and wires...
I get some bucks and sputters but no running.
I've tried swapping the trigger wire (for d-jet points replacement) connections.
I tried static timing to 0TDC and it seemed a little more promising but still no go.
One thing that's bugging me is: When I have the engine at 10BTDC ready for static timing, shouldn't the rotor be pointing basically directly at the corresponding cap contact for cylinder #1? When checking the position after doing the static timing procedure the rotor is pointing past contact #1, maybe almost 1/3 of the way to the next contact. Maybe I need to re-position the drive key? I think I read somewhere that's doable. I dunno... I really liked the idea of eliminating the d-jet trigger points from the FI system and why I'm doing this in the first place. Any help is greatly appreciated!
