Yep, that sounds correct. It's been a long time since I played with one, maybe I just used the hacksaw to clean out the slot.
If you don't want to pull it apart, try turning it in so that you can get at the threads that still have a little epoxy in them. Alternately, you could hacksaw an 1/8" piece off the end that would take away the epoxied threads. Also, you could drill a hole through it so that you can access the the range screw, but when you use it alone to lean out the cruise mixture, it also leans out the full throttle mixture which means you loose a few horsepower. Not neccessarily a bad thing with current fuel prices.
Have you got any others? Like one that leaks? I've had good luck fixing them with silicon.
