I did my last 240 heater motor in -15C, gale-force wind conditions (night-time, of course...). The key is layers. As soon as you start losing body heat the fingers and toes are the first to get cold because, to simplify a bit, the body stops sending blood out to them in an effort to prevent hypothermia - lose the hands and feet, save the organs. So bundle up like you're getting ready for a polar expedition and you'll be surprised just how long your hands stay warm. I wore long underwear, sweatpants & jeans, several shirts, a sweater, down-filled jacket and wind jacket, I looked like the Michelin man but I got the job done, with bare hands. And an added benefit is the extra padding cushions your side and back as you lie contorted across the door sill trying to reach stuff...
