It sounds like you need to reset the timing in a big way. I doubt that the engine would run on one cylinder.
Take off the valve cover and turn the engine in the direction of rotation to see the timing mark at zero. Wiggle the crank back and forth and see which rockers move - on number one or number four. The cylinder with the rockers that don't move is on compression. Whichever terminal in the cap the rotor is pointing to then goes to that cylinder. Wire the cap from there in the direction of rotation in the firing order. If number one, then 1-3-4-2. If number four then 4-2-1-3. The points should be slightly open at zero degrees, having fired before top. Confirm all this first.
