Danny,
If you're using KD needles, the tendency is to tune them a little lean at idle. They are appreciably richer at idle pos II than KN & DX needles, and should be plenty rich for the E head & D or hoppier cam; particularly on accel. But they won't turn out like they should unless you're on the rich side at idle. As mentioned, cruising at WOT they are identical to DX, I'd only opt for them if you can't seem to get the KD's sorted. In perfect tune the DX's would very likely leave your car behaving like KDs which are a bit off mark. Okay, but not ideal. SM needles conversely are just slightly leaner than KDs on accel, but richer than both cruising. Probably a happy medium for you. They are the same as KDs at idle but would probably be less touchy to tune.
If you want economy KNs will do it too, but it would take a bit longer than you're used to getting to 60mph. Also leaner at WOT than the other "B20" needles.
I was also apprehensive about not using the alignment rings going to DCOEs on my B head, but it's worked great; and will have to do the same thing on the F w/ various carbs once it goes in the 122.
Worth experimenting anyway! Well, if you can buy needles...
-Sean
