The oil is a legitimate tuning element, just like needles and springs.

I know it is, I've used WD-40 several times but never had to use thicker than ATF. I'm just saying that a stock B18 or B20 uses ATF & if you have to stick something else in it, then you better find out what is actually wrong with it.
