You asked for specifics, so here we go. ;-)
You said you are new to working on your cars. You must have at least a test light to troubleshoot this problem. Eventually you will want a Bentley manual, a Haynes manual, all the Volvo Green Books you can get your hands on, and tools and test equipment as necessary. But for now, let's try to get the charging circuit working on your car. ;-)
Open and print this image. It is a page from one of the Volvo Green Books.
Your charge indicator must be lit with KEY ON/ENGINE OFF. Check fuse 13. OK?
No --> Replace the fuse.
Yes --> There is either a wiring problem or a problem with the field circuit in the regulator. Connect your test light between fuse 13 and ground with KEY ON/ENGINE OFF. Test light ON?
No --> There is a wiring fault between the battery and fuse 13.
Yes --> Continue.
Connect the alligator clip of your test light to fuse 13. With KEY ON/ENGINE OFF, probe the D+/61 terminal of your voltage regulator. Your test light is now your BATT indicator light. Did the test light come on?
No --> There is a problem with the field circuit in the regulator.
Yes --> There is a wiring fault between the fuse and the bulb or the bulb and terminal D+/61 of the regulator.
